Research Results Reveal Unexpected Risk
Macular degeneration is one of many areas of research that has recently been the subject of a study in liver transplant patients.
The purpose of the study was to see whether the genetics of the donor and recipient were related to what happened to the patients.
Dr. Graeme Alexander tells us that the outcome has been unexpected: the incidence of macular degeneration is much higher in transplant patients than in the general population.
With that in mind, Dr. Alexander now recommends that all patients who have had a transplant should consider themselves at risk of this and should undergo annual opticianís screening. If patients develop any new symptoms of visual deterioration they should attend promptly and not delay review.
